THINGS TO DO IN PORT DOUGLAS:
The tropical town of Port Douglas, roughly an hour drive north from Cairns, has it all: the aquamarine waters of the Great Barrier Reef, the breathtaking canopy of the Daintree Rainforest, the crystal creeks of Mossman Gorge, and the palm fringed golden sands of Four Mile Beach. It is the only place on Earth where two World Heritage-listed sites – the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest – meet.
Great Barrier Reef Cruise
Imagine lazing on a white sandy beach lapped by azure blue waters teaming with multi coloured fish swimming over bright coral gardens. You can do that when you cruise to Low Isles from Port Douglas or to Green Island from Cairns. Choose to go for a dive among some of the world's greatest marine life, or just snorkel. And if water isn't your thing, feel free to just watch from the boat.
Daintree Rainforest Tour
The Daintree Rainforest is a breathaking natural marvel estimated to be around 135 million years old. It is the only place in the world where two World Heritage-listed sites meet - the rainforest and the reef.
With more than 900,000 hectares to explore, the pace you set it up to you. Meander along a rainforest boardwalk, eyes peeled to glimpse a southern cassowary and his chicks. Check out secret swimming holes, stunning scenery and unrivalled natural landscapes.
Tree-clad mountains rise sharply from the riverbanks of the Mossman Gorge and set the scene at the spectacular entrance to Daintree National Park.
Walk along the national park trails and cross the suspension bridge. Watch the river tumble over giant granite boulders, swim in the refreshing crystalline water and have it all brought home by learning the Dreamtime stories of the Kuku Yalanki people, who share their culture and relationship with the rainforest on guided private walks.
Known as the village in the rainforest, Kuranda boasts a vibrant arts and craft culture. The picturesque mountain retreat of Kuranda village is surrounded by World Heritage-listed rainforest and makes a great day trip from Cairns. Its cool, tropical climate makes it ideal for rainforest walks along the Barron River, or around the village itself where majestic fig trees are home to colourful parrots. Visit a gallery with local Aboriginal art, be immersed in a cloud of colourful butterflies, listen to a joyous bird chorus, or cuddle a koala. Kuranda is also the traditional home of the Djabugay people, who call it Ngunbay or "place of the platypus".
