VIA Rail - The Ocean
VIA Rail's Ocean train links Montréal, Québec, with Halifax, Nova Scotia. You'll travel hundreds of kilometres admiring the coastal path the train follows and sleeping in comfort onboard.
The Ocean service links Montréal and Halifax travelling overnight 3 times a week in each direction. The Ocean leaves Montréal in the evening at 6.55pm, travels along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, across New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, reaching Moncton before noon and Halifax at 5.35pm. In the other direction, the Ocean leaves Halifax at 12pm, arriving in Montréal the next morning at 9.15am.
The Ocean is the ideal choice for visiting Québec and the Atlantic region. It is also very handy for short journeys in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Baggage Important Information:
Departures on the Ocean route offer a checked baggage service. Baggage allowances on these journeys vary from those which do not offer a checked baggage service. Allowances are as follows:
Checked baggage allowance - Ocean trains (per person)
For trains which have a checked baggage service, you are permitted to check in the following:
Two checked items: Maximum 23 kg (50 lb) each / 158 linear cm (62 linear inches) / (length/width/height) each
Items weighing more than 32 kg (70 lb) or more than 180 cm (6ft) will not be carried.
A surcharge will be made for overweight/oversized baggage.
If you plan on checking in your baggage, you must arrive at the station at least 45 minutes prior to the departure time of your train. On overnight train services, you should check your main luggage and bring only a small overnight bag into your cabin/train carriage.
Carry-on baggage allowance – All trains (per person)
Option 1: 2 articles maximum 11.5 kg (25 lb) each 54.5 x 39.5 x 23 cm -and- 1 personal item (i.e. laptop or small back-pack)
Items of more than 11.5 kg (25 lb) are not permitted on board.
Option 2: 1 article maximum 18 kg (40 lb) 69 x 53.5 x 35.5 cm -and- 1 personal item (i.e laptop or small back pack)
An article between 41 & 50 lb is allowed on board but subject to a charge of CAD$20 each way.

Rail travel in Canada can be subject to delays and we cannot accept responsibility for any costs associated with disruption to your travel plans caused by rail delays. We strongly recommend that you DO NOT make any onward travel arrangements on any day that involves rail travel.
Travel classes onboard The Ocean*
Enjoy spacious seating and a spectacular view through large picture windows. Your comfortable seat offers you plenty of space to move, stretch and relax. Meals, snacks, hot, cold and alcoholic beverages are available to purchase onboard. You can also purchase a comfort kit onboard for $10 which includes a polar fleece blaket, earplugs, neck pillow and eye shades.
Sleeper Class & Sleeper Plus Class
Choose from a cosy cabin for one or two. Meals^ are available along with hot and cold drinks and alcoholic beverages for purchase. Your in-room kit will include a shower kit, bottled water and earplugs.
