DESTINATION UPDATE: AMERICA (25 July 17)
Scenic Route Highway 1, California
Following bad weather in the area, and deterioration of the Pfeiffer Bridge structure at Big Sur on Highway 1, the bridge was closed to road and pedestrian traffic since mid-February 2017 and demolition has started. A further massive landslide occurred 50 km south of Pfeiffer Canyon/Big Sur on 13/14 May, causing more damage, and has delayed the work to reconstruct the Bridge. The closure of the bridge and road means that travellers can no longer make the complete road trip on scenic Highway 1. Motorists may now only travel south on State Route 1 from Carmel to just south of Palo Colorado in Monterey County; and north from Cambria to Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County. The section between Palo Colorado and Ragged Point is closed to all vehicle traffic. For motorists planning to drive between San Francisco and Los Angeles, or vice versa, a diversion is possible along Highway 101.
At this time, the road is scheduled to re-open at the end of September 2017, but of course any further weather or construction issues could delay the re-opening. If your driving itinerary includes this portion of Highway #1, you will need to reconsider your plans and allow more time for your journey.
