Africa Annual Climate
The climate across Southern and East Africa is as diverse as its landscapes, offering travellers a wide range of weather experiences throughout the year. From the vast deserts of Namibia and the sweeping savannahs of Kenya and Tanzania to the dramatic coastlines of South Africa and the tropical beaches of Zanzibar, each destination has its own seasonal patterns and ideal times to visit.
Southern Africa, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia, generally experiences warm summers and cooler, drier winters. The summer months (November to March) bring higher temperatures and rainfall, particularly across safari regions, while winter (May to August) is typically dry and sunny, with cooler mornings and evenings. This dry season is an excellent time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around rivers and waterholes. South Africa's Cape region has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, while Namibia's desert regions experience very little rainfall throughout the year.
East Africa, including Kenya and Tanzania, enjoys warm temperatures throughout the year, although conditions vary depending on altitude and location. The region experiences two main rainy seasons: the long rains from March to May and the short rains from October to December. The drier periods, particularly June to October and January to February, are popular for safari holidays, offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. These months also coincide with key stages of the Great Migration between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara.
Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate, with warm temperatures and sunshine throughout the year. The main rainy season runs from March to May, bringing heavier showers and higher humidity, while shorter rains typically arrive in November. June to October is generally cooler and drier, making it an excellent time for beach escapes. January and February are also popular, with hot, sunny conditions and relatively little rainfall.
Thanks to its varied geography and weather patterns, Southern and East Africa offer exceptional year-round travel opportunities. Whether you're seeking thrilling wildlife encounters, desert adventures, dramatic landscapes or relaxing Indian Ocean beaches, there is always somewhere to explore at its best.
