Africa Travel Advice

You are sure to love your time in Africa and the Indian Ocean; this remarkable region is a captivating mix of diverse cultures, extraordinary wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. From the sweeping savannahs of Kenya and Tanzania and the waterways of Botswana's Okavango Delta to the dramatic deserts of Namibia, the iconic landscapes of South Africa and the idyllic tropical islands of Zanzibar, there are unforgettable experiences for every traveller.

Passports & Visas:

  • Visa requirements vary across Africa and the Indian Ocean. British passport holders can visit some destinations visa-free, while others require an eVisa, visa on arrival or advance visa application. Requirements differ by country and length of stay, and some destinations require proof of onward travel or additional documentation. Always check the latest entry requirements for each destination via official government sources before travelling.

Language & Culture:

  • Africa is home to an incredible variety of languages and cultures. English is widely spoken in South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia, although local languages are also commonly used. Swahili is widely spoken in Kenya and Tanzania, while Afrikaans and several indigenous languages are spoken across southern Africa. French and Portuguese are also spoken in some African countries. Warm hospitality is a key part of local culture, and visitors should be respectful of local customs, traditions and communities, particularly when visiting rural areas and cultural sites.

Money & Expenses:

  • Currency varies across Africa and the Indian Ocean. The South African rand, Botswana pula, Namibian dollar, Kenyan shilling, Tanzanian shilling and Zimbabwe Gold are among the currencies used across the region. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in larger hotels, restaurants and tourist areas, although cash is useful for smaller purchases, local markets and remote locations. US dollars are also commonly accepted in some safari destinations. ATMs are available in major towns and cities, but it's advisable to carry some local currency when travelling further afield.

Local Transport

  • Transport options vary depending on the destination and style of travel. Domestic flights are a convenient way to cover longer distances, particularly when travelling between safari reserves and remote lodges. Private transfers, chauffeur-driven vehicles and guided tours are popular ways to explore, while self-drive holidays are particularly well suited to destinations such as South Africa and Namibia. In cities, taxis and ride-hailing services are widely available. Boats and small aircraft also play an important role in reaching remote safari lodges and islands.
