Interesting Hawaiian Islands facts

The state of Hawaii consists of eight main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hawaii’s nickname is the “Aloha State.” The word aloha can mean “love,” “compassion,” and “mercy.” Aloha is used both as “hello” and “goodbye.”

Hawaii has two official languages, Hawaiian and English, though Pidgin, Samoan, and Tongan are also spoken.

The Hawaiian hula was originally a form of worship performed by highly trained men who were supposedly taught the dance by the Hawaiian god Luka.

Where to go in the Hawaiian Islands

Hawaii (Big Island)

Hawaii, also known as Big Island, is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. Head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the snow-capped peaks of Maunakea; explore the lush valleys of the Hilo and the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach. Whatever you do, the island of Hawaii is nature’s finest display.

Maui

Maui, or “The Valley Isle,” is Hawaii’s second largest island. It’s world-famous white-sand beaches, whale-watching adventures migrating humpback whales, locally-produced cuisine and the incomparable sunrises and sunsets are all likely to be the reason Maui has been voted "Best Island in the U.S." by Condé Nast Traveler readers for more than twenty years.

Oahu

Oahu, or “The Gathering Place,” is home to the majority of Hawaii’s population. Here, deep-rooted Eastern and Western cultures of the Native Hawaiian people mix; the contrast of traditional and modern is what makes discovering Oahu so special. From the bustle of city life to laidback surf towns, you’ll find plenty of way to explore Oahu.

Kauai

Kauai, or the "Garden Island," is the oldest and northernmost island in Hawaii. Think of turquoise valleys, jutting mountain tops and rugged cliffs and you’re almost there. Add to that centuries-old tropical rainforests, tumbling waterfalls and stunning rivers, and you’ve got a near perfect destination. You can kayak, snorkel, hike or even zipline your way around Kauai.
