48 Hours in New York

You’ve got 48 hours to spend in New York City – with so much to see, where do you even start?! No need to worry; we’ve put together an itinerary that you may want to follow to make the most out of your flying visit to the Big Apple.

Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and grab a map from the lobby area to help you gather your bearings.

Day 1: Exploring New York’s most famous borough – Manhattan

What better way to settle into New York than by sightseeing at some of the world’s most iconic landmarks? Consider buying a 1 or 2-day pass which will allow you free or discounted access to New York’s popular attractions.

Empire State Building

9:00am: Today, we recommend you get up bright and early to head down to Battery Park, where you’ll beat the crowds and take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Book in advance and you’ll even be able to access the Lady’s crown, from which you’ll have stunning views of Manhattan. Your ferry journey this morning takes you onwards to Ellis Island, where you’ll learn all about the history of the first immigrants who arrived in the US.

12:00/1:00pm: Head back to the heart of the city for some food; will you be trying some of New York’s classics? From bagels to pastrami-packed subs, freshly baked pretzels to classic New York cheesecake – the city is world-famous for its hearty portions and amazing food and it’s not hard to see why.

New York City

3:00pm: Could any trip to NYC be complete without a visit to the top of the Empire State Building? Absolutely not! After filling up on All-American specialities, head to the top of this iconic skyscraper for unforgettable 360-degree views of New York City and beyond. This experience is more than just a view; journey through the building and see an Art Deco lobby and murals, the historical “Dare to Dream” exhibit and learn all about the fascinating history of the building's construction and restoration.

5:00/6:00pm: Head back to your hotel early this evening and get ready for a big night in the sparkling city. Consider visiting Times Square to soak up the atmosphere; the spectacular array of colours light up the night sky and you’ll be dazzled by the sights and sounds. Treat yourself to a meal at the spectacular Carmine’s Italian Restaurant before heading to see a show on Broadway. Whether it’s a  new musical, a long-running hit or a gripping drama you want to see, there’s something for everyone. If you’re not tired from your day of exploring, New York’s buzzing nightlife awaits you; for beer, head to ABC Beer Co., for cocktails (and unrivalled views) head to Bar SixtyFive.

Day 2: And the rest…

Central Park and 9/11 Memorial

9am: Today visit The 9/11 Memorial Museum to learn about the tragic events that occurred on 11 September 2001. The museum displays artefacts associated with the events of 9/11, while presenting stories of loss and recovery. The memorial’s twin reflecting pools are edged by bronze panels, inscribed with the name of every person who died in the attacks.

11am: After a sobering morning, take a stroll through Central Park. You’ll be walking in the steps of movie superstars; films such as Spiderman, Cruel Intentions, The Devil Wears Prada, Elf and Home Alone were all filmed here.

Brooklyn Bridge

12:30pm: Take the subway to Brooklyn Bridge. Looming majestically over NYC’s East River, the bridge links Manhattan and Brooklyn. It takes about an hour to cross the bridge; once you’ve made your way across and have taken plenty of pictures, it’s time to stop for food.  The River Café offer spectacular waterside dining with amazing views, or for more relaxed dining, grab a spot in the queue at Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, one of New York’s best-known pizzerias.

4:00pm: Ride the subway back to Manhattan, where you may want to indulge in some retail therapy. Stop by Tiffany & Co., synonymous with American luxury; Bloomingdales, the ultimate Manhattan department store; Macy’s, an iconic New York staple or experience the buzz of upscale Saks Fifth Avenue.

7:00pm: Finish your day with a quick refresh at your hotel before heading out for a goodbye meal.  Perhaps you’ll treat yourself to an extravagant meal at a famous Manhattan restaurant such as Daniel or Per Se… but make sure to book in advance, they’re popular for a reason!
