First Class Experiences: American South with Karen

Karen, our Australasia Senior Specialist, has recently returned from a global agent FAM, exploring 5 tour brands in 1 trip! Hosted by Trafalgar Tours. This trip of a lifetime showcases the fascinating, rich culture of Memphis, Nashville, Natchez, and New Orleans, plus a trip to Elvis’s iconic Graceland. Certainly a bucket list trip and one that's got us All Shook Up.

1. How long did you go to America and what did you do whilst there?

I went to the Southern States of the USA on an escorted tour. We stayed for 2 nights in Nashville, 2 nights in Memphis, 1 night in Natchez in a hotel on the banks of the Mississippi and then finally we stayed 2 nights in New Orleans.

2. Have you ever travelled to the Southern States of America before?

No this was my first time visiting these places. It is, however, been on my bucket list to do for a while.

3. Is there an iconic moment/experience during your trip you would like to share?

Two really – I loved the Grand Ole Opry – we were lucky enough to see a performance, with lots of different types of country music with comedy. It was a fantastic night! Graceland’s is a must for any music lover, home of the King and his music.

4. What were the things you like the most about your trip?

My top 3 things had to be: live music, atmosphere, the weather and the food.

5. What tips would you give to someone who is visiting for the first time?

Hop on/Hop off bus tour is a must to get your bearings, prebook some nice restaurants as the Distillery District gets quite busy at the weekends. Also see if there is a baseball or basketball game on, book some tickets to see the Blue Jays and the Raptors if you can.

6. What tips would you give to someone who is visiting for the first time?

•    Portion sizes are enormous, taking home leftovers is the done thing.
•    Ensure you put on sunscreen – you may be in and out of the sun, but it is blistering hot.
•    Stay at the Guest House at Gracelands! Such a lovely hotel in a fantastic location.
•    Try a hurricane in New Orleans – a powerful cocktail that will floor you if you don’t watch out.
•    Be aware of your safety – just as you would in a city in the UK.

7. What kind of traveller would enjoy an Escorted Touring?

Would definitely recommend this trip for couples and groups of friends – escorted touring is not for families and not much privacy or free time for honeymooners.

9. Would you recommend this trip?

Absolutely!
