First Class Experiences – Oregon

Keir Ashley, our Product Manager for America, recently returned from Oregon with Travel Oregon and shares his First Class travel experience across the state’s dramatic coastlines, scenic routes and iconic landscapes.

How would you describe Oregon in three words?

Dramatic, peaceful, inspiring.

What was the standout highlight of your trip?

The time we spent driving the coastal routes in Oregon was a real highlight for me. So many travellers have the California coastal Highway 1 on their bucket lists, but Highway 101 in Oregon is the same road and passes through equally spectacular cliff and ocean views, charming small towns and deserted beaches. I am always a fan of the ‘road less travelled’ and the Oregon coast is this with unforgettable character. Watching the mist roll in from the Pacific at Ecola State Park to enjoying the sunset from the balcony of Headlands Lodge in Pacific City overlooking Haystack Rock and Cape Kiwanda’s dunes was where both relaxation combined with the most dramatic coastal scenery.

Were there any hidden gems or lesser-known spots that really surprised you?

The city of Portland has a lot to offer, and a great place to base yourself for a few days either at the start or end of your Oregon road-trip. As a city, it has distinct character with its unofficial slogan and mantra ‘Keep Portland Weird’ embracing the city’s quirky, eccentric culture and independent businesses and has small-town energy with artisan shops and eateries dotted around the city. The town of Sisters was also somewhere I hadn’t considered before this trip – with a preserved Old West-style downtown and plenty to do for outdoor lovers in the surrounding forests and lakes, all set against the backdrop of the breathtaking views of the Three Sisters – a trio of volcanic peaks, it was the perfect scenic retreat.

How does Oregon compare to other American destinations you’ve visited?

The contrast in scenery in Oregon is what makes it a unique destination. Travelling from the city of Portland to the wild Pacific coast, through the valleys full of vineyards to the high desert, mountain peaks and the serene water and imposing landscapes of Crater Lake. The state is so diverse which makes it stand out amongst other US destinations.

What kind of traveller would enjoy Oregon?
k k k

Oregon is the perfect road-trip destination. For those wanting to indulge in the best food accompanied by local wines, all whilst overlooking some of the most inspiring scenery, it is a great location to consider. Anyone that wants to take in such a diverse range of landscapes and beating the crowds that you may come across in other popular west coast states, Oregon should be on your list. Head to Central Oregon for those wanting outdoor adventure in high-desert and mountain peaks with rafting, horse riding and stargazing. Those interested in the goldrush and indigenous history can head to the eastern part of the state too. Oregon in its entirety really has something to suit a range of traveller, and offers the space for slow travel and the chance to disconnect.
