Top Winter Activities in Alberta

If you’re fanatical about winter, Alberta needs to be at the top of your travel list. Here are just some of the things you can do in Alberta at this magical time of the year!

1. Relax in the gorgeous Banff Hot Springs

Tired out from all those winter activities? End your day by relaxing in the gorgeous Banff Hot Springs, or do as the locals do and go in the morning when it’s quieter. Soak in the steamy hot mineral water where travellers have gone to ‘take the waters for over a hundred years. Banff National Park’s only hot springs pool gives you an amazing authentic heritage experience that is a favourite among visitors!

2. Go cross-country skiing throughout the National Parks

Alberta Skiing

Skiers of all levels can enjoy the variety of the skiable terrain in Alberta. Choose to ski in Banff in the ski resorts of Sunshine, Mount Norquay and Lake Louise, or further north in Marmot Basin in Jasper.

3. Ice skate on the iconic Lake Louise

Lace-up your ice skating boots! Take to the ice and you’re sure to have one of the most iconic Canadian experiences ever. There are several maintained places to skate, including several rinks in Banff town and the iconic ice at Lake Louise. Bring your own skates or rent them from inside the beautiful Fairmount Chateau Lake Louise.

4. Jasper is a designated International Dark Sky Preserve

Banff Northen Lights

Look up in awe of the aurora borealis (that’s the Northern lights to me and you!). From September through mid-May, if you’re lucky you may spot the aurora borealis on a dark night in Banff National Park. Jasper National Park is a designated International Dark Sky Preserve, it’s a natural spot to look for the Northern Lights or just star gazing. The further north you can experience nature’s own fireworks at Fort McMurray.

5. Explore Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake

Explore Maligne Lake, one of the largest natural lakes in the Canadian Rockies. It has many hiking and cross-country skiing trails surrounding it, making it a year-round destination. There are plenty of ways to explore; whether on foot, skis, snowshoes, or riding a fat bike, the lake has something for everyone.

6. Attend the Ice Magic Festival

Set in the spectacular surroundings of Lake Louise, the Ice Magic Festival is a world-class event with over 20 years of history. Watch as talented ice artists from around the world skillfully combine gruelling physicality with precision artistry in an ice carving competition. This event takes place in January, so be sure to book your trip to Canada then to experience the magic!

7. Go dog-sledging in the Canadian Rockies

Dogsledding in the Canadian Rockies is the perfect way to relax and take in the scenic landscape. Being pulled along the frozen Alberta landscape is an unforgettable experience! You can try standing on the back of the sledge and guiding the dogs or cosy up under a blanket and watch the breathtaking scenery.

8. Indulge in authentic cuisine

And lastly, be sure to make the most of your trip by indulging in some authentic Rocky Mountain cuisine; it consists of high-quality, locally sourced ingredients such as game, fish, fresh berries and vegetables. Many restaurants in the province serve fresh ingredients sourced from the province, from farm to fork!
