Why Calgary Deserves More Than Just a Stopover

When people think of an Alberta holiday, Banff and the Canadian Rockies usually steal the spotlight. But after spending six unforgettable days in Calgary during the world-famous Calgary Stampede, I can honestly say this vibrant city deserves far more than a quick overnight stay.

From the moment we landed on a busy Air Canada flight from London Heathrow, it was clear Calgary was in celebration mode. A private transfer took us to the Best Western Premier Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre before we headed to Tool Shed Brewing Company for local craft beers and pizza. Everywhere we looked there were cowboy hats, boots and western decorations, with one word echoing across the city...

Experiencing the Calgary Stampede

The following day we explored Calgary's fascinating history, thriving food scene and welcoming atmosphere before heading to the Calgary Stampede.

Thanks to exclusive VIP backstage access, we gained a unique insight into the exceptional animal welfare standards behind the event and even had the opportunity to meet some of the cowboys competing throughout the Stampede.

The day was packed with unforgettable experiences, including:

  • Watching the famous Stampede Band

  • Sampling local wines

  • Enjoying the midway rides

  • Trying quirky Stampede food

  • Shopping for authentic western clothing and souvenirs

The celebrations continued with visits to the Alberta Boot Company and the iconic Smithbilt Hat Factory before an incredible evening watching the world-famous Chuckwagon Races and spectacular Grandstand Show from a private hospitality box. We even spotted Canada's Prime Minister enjoying the festivities.

Beyond the Stampede

Calgary offers far more than just its famous festival.

Our final full day included visits to Heritage Park Historical Village, the Calgary Farmers' Market and beautiful Canmore – a stunning Rocky Mountain town just 20 minutes before Banff, offering breathtaking scenery, independent shops and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Before flying home, we took in the panoramic views from Calgary Tower, explored the city's impressive +15 elevated walkway system and enjoyed some last-minute shopping at The Core.

Top Tips for Selling Calgary Stampede

With more than 1.4 million visitors attending the Calgary Stampede over just 10 days each July, demand is incredibly high.

If your clients want to experience the rodeo, Chuckwagon Races or the spectacular Grandstand Show, pre-booking is absolutely essential. The best seats and hospitality packages sell out months in advance, making booking through a specialist like First Class Holidays invaluable.

During my visit, I met several disappointed travellers who had arranged their own trips only to discover the evening performances were completely sold out. While they still enjoyed the incredible atmosphere, they missed some of the event's biggest highlights.

Don't rush straight to Banff.

Spend a night or two in Calgary first. You'll discover a vibrant, friendly city with fantastic food, fascinating attractions and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else during Stampede.

It's the perfect introduction to Alberta before exploring the spectacular Canadian Rockies.
