Okavango Delta, Chobe and beyond

Botswana

Botswana is a safari destination defined by vast wilderness, remarkable wildlife and a strong commitment to conservation. Travel here is truly immersive, with low visitor numbers and pristine landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. At the heart of the country lies the extraordinary Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world, where waterways weave through islands and floodplains. Exploring by mokoro canoe or on guided walks brings you close to elephants, hippos and abundant birdlife in one of Africa’s most unique ecosystems.

In the north, Chobe National Park is famed for its dense wildlife populations and unforgettable river cruises, while the dramatic landscapes of the Savute area reveal predator-rich plains shaped by the mysterious Savute Channel. Nearby, Moremi Game Reserve combines lagoons, woodland and savannah, offering some of the most diverse game viewing in Africa.

Where to go in Botswana

Chobe National Park

The Chobe National Park is found in northern Botswana and unfolds across floodplains, riverfront and teak woodland, creating one of Africa’s richest ecosystems. The Chobe River draws vast herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as lion, leopard and prolific birdlife. Easily accessible from Victoria Falls this is a great introduction to a Botswana Safari.

Moremi Game Reserve

The Moremi Game Reserve sits in the heart of the Okavango Delta and is a patchwork of floodplains, lagoons, reed lined channels and seasonal waterways. This diverse ecosystem supports a thriving population of lion, leopard, rare wild dogs, large elephant herds and a myriad birdlife. A safari here truly gives a wonderful all round Botswana experience.

Okavango Delta

Spreading from the Kalahari Desert, the Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. Seasonal floods transform the dry plains into lush wetlands where huge herds of elephants’ wade and hippos wallow and it plays host to one of Africa’s most diverse concentrations of wildlife including lion, leopard, spotted hyenas, African wild dogs, zebra and giraffe.

Savute

Located in southern Chobe, Savute is famed for the Savute Channel which erratically and ebbs and flows. This region is known for its high density of predators and concentrations of elephant. During the dry season visitors can expect to see zebra, wildebeest and buffalo in large numbers around Savute Marsh.

Makgadikgadi Pans

The otherworldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Plans is a vast plain of shimmering, white salt flats. The summer rains bring a magical transformation, as the pans fill with water, evolving into a lush, shallow wetland that is a haven for flamingos, pelicans and migrating herds of zebra and wildebeest.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the world’s largest protected areas. The ancestral home of the San people, this vast area evokes a timeless history. Characterized by vast grasslands and fossilized river valleys, it serves as a crucial sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including black-maned lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs.
