North Dakota

Real America Visit USA

Create your own legend in North Dakota. The rugged, untamed landscape of Theodore Roosevelt National Park unfolds across more than 70,000 acres. President Roosevelt’s love for the American West was born here and today outdoor enthusiasts share his passion. Step back in time at the Custer House, soak up the atmosphere of the United Tribes Pow Wow, dig for dinosaurs, or see the original wood chipper movie prop in Fargo.

This national park encompasses over 70,000 acres of breath-taking North Dakota Badlands, meaning there’s an adventure to be found for everyone!

Consider driving through the south unit of the park on the 36-mile scenic loop through the buttes and Badlands. The winding drive features striking overlooks with unbelievable views, trailheads for 12 different hiking trails, interpretive signs about the Park’s history and natural wonders, as well as real prairie dog towns. You might even get close to a buffalo!

Rich in both military and early Native American history, Fort Abraham Lincoln was once an important infantry and cavalry post. It was from this fort that Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the Seventh cavalry rode out on their ill-fated expedition against the Sioux at the Little Big Horn.

A modern campground is located in a scenic wooded area adjacent to the Heart River with picnic sites and playground equipment. Walking along the gently sloping hills, you’ll have a panoramic vista of the Missouri River from the park's nature and historic trails.

Within the park, you’ll find Custer House, the house that most closely represents the architecture and style of home that General Custer and his wife Libby would have stayed in at Fort Riley.  General Custer's house burned due to a kitchen fire.  Some of the house has been restored and is complete with correct period furnishings.

The greater Fargo area bustles with things to see and do. It is home to golf courses, unique shopping, cultural and artistic events, exciting NCAA Division I athletics at North Dakota State University and major events and concerts. No matter what you love, you’ll find it in Fargo. Culture aficionados cherish its museums and theatres. The vibrant downtown offers unique lodging, eating establishments and entertainment venues. It’s the largest city in North Dakota. The metro area has several colleges and an active arts community. Families flock to the Red River Valley Zoo and Children's Museum at Yunker Farm. Stop and stay awhile, you’ll be glad you did!

Medora Musical (1 June to 8 September 2018)

The Medora Musical is the rootin'-tootinest, boot-scootinest show in all the west! There's no other show quite like it.

Set in the outdoor splendour of the rugged North Dakota Badlands, this professionally produced, high energy, western-style musical show is proudly dedicated to the legacy of America's 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, and the time he spent here in the Badlands of the Dakota Territory (The same Badlands that in 2016 were named The New York Times number 5 place to visit in the world!).

The nationally acclaimed Pitchfork Steak Fondue is a traveller's delight. This is a must-do dinner to pair with your Medora Musical tickets. Every evening, chefs load steaks onto pitchforks and fondue them western style. Savour your steak as you overlook the picturesque Badlands from atop a bluff at the Tjaden Terrace. Your steak comes with all the fixings!

Plus, you'll be serenaded with western melodies performed live by members of The Coal Diggers from the Medora Musical. Don't miss this unique dining experience that was featured on the national television show, Best Of, on The Food Network!
