Where to go in Northern India

Delhi

Delhi is a city that beats to its own unique rhythm. Hugely historic and a place where old and new collide, its charms are myriad. From the Jama Masjid, the Red Fort and Qutab Minar to Old Delhi’s mind-bending tangle of laneways where monkeys swing overhead, rickshaws navigate the narrow streets and tiny shopfronts sell spices, silks and jewels in every colour of the rainbow.

Agra

Agra is home to the iconic Taj Mahal, a timeless symbol of love and one of the world’s most beautiful landmarks. But the city’s charm doesn’t end there. Once the heart of the Mughal Empire, Agra is rich in history, with stunning architecture and cultural treasures which include the magnificent Agra Fort, an often-overlooked gem, regarded as one of the finest forts in India, that’s not to be missed.

Jaipur

Gateway to Rajasthan, Jaipur is a kaleidoscope of colour and life. Terracotta buildings that glow pink in the sun, laneways named for the crafts they specialise in and traffic that weaves around camels, cows and the occasional elephant. Must-see sights include the City Place, Jantar Mantar - the royal observatory, the intricate honeycomb Hawa Mahal and, on a hilltop outside the city, the Amber Fort.

Udaipur

Often called the City of Lakes, this captivating destination is set against the backdrop of serene waters and the rugged Aravalli Hills. Its graceful palaces, intricate temples, and historic havelis speak to a rich and layered past. Wander through lively, colourful bazaars, explore a thriving arts scene, and discover heritage buildings that bring the city’s unique character to life.

Ranthambore

Regarded as the best place in Rajasthan to spot the tigers, the Ranthambore National Park is a place of wild jungle scrubland, rocky outcrops and watering holes. Beyond tigers, it’s home to leopards, sloth bears, hyenas and marsh crocodiles and is a bird-lovers' paradise. Cloistered high on a hilltop, the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Ranthambore Fort dates from the 10th century and offers timeless views.

Shimla & Darjeeling

Shimla was once the summer capital of the British Raj and a popular haunt for those escaping the summer heat of the cities. Strung along a scenic ridge offering sweeping views of the Himalayan peaks, explore colonial architecture and enjoy scenic hikes in the cool mountain air. Darjeeling, in the eastern Himalayas, is famed for its mist-clad hills, tea plantations and the UNESCO World Heritage-Listed Toy Train.
