Waterton

Waterton is a National Park located in the southwest corner of Alberta, and borders Glacier National Park in Montana, USA. Together they make-up the Waterton - Glacier International Peace Park, the first of its kind in the world. Waterton was Canada's fourth National Park formed in 1895 and named after Waterton Lake, it is a blend of unusual geology, mild climate, rare wild flowers and an abundance of wildlife. Many visitors enjoy this National Park as it is uncrowded and quiet creating the perfect place to enjoy the spectacular scenery.

The nearest airport to Waterton is Calagary operating direct flights from the UK with Air Canada, and just a 120 mile drive south or the nearest U.S airport is Kalispell with a similar driving distance of 120 miles.

  • The park covers an area of 505 square kilometres (195 square miles)
  • Waterton has some of the oldest, exposed sedimentary rock in the Rocky Mountains.
  • Waterton is one of Alberta’s windiest places. Winter winds over 100 km/hr are common. Waterton has many chinooks, which contribute to it being one of Alberta’s warmest areas in winter. Chinook winds can cause winter temperatures to rise dramatically within hours.
  • Waterton is home for more than 60 species of mammals, 250 species of birds, 24 species of fish and 10 species of reptiles and amphibians. Some of the larger predators include grizzly bears, black bears, wolf, coyote and cougar.

    1. Try snowshoeing into Crandell Lake for a true winter experience then picnic under the shelter. 

    2.  Skate on Waterton Lake as once in a while the ice on the lake turns into a spectacular skating rink a great day out for all the family. 

    3. Cross country ski the Dipper and Cameron trails up to Cameron lake, then warm up with a hot chocolate at Little Prairie picnic area.
